Webinar Summary: This presentation is a one-hour course designed to help the participant understand the field of injury biomechanics and how a biomechanical engineer may be critical in identifying the sequence of events, in mitigation/elimination of injuries, or even in occupant ejections during accidental events. The course begins with an introduction to injury biomechanics and the study of injury mechanisms and tissue tolerance. Participants will then explore the different but complementary expertise that can be offered by biomechanical engineers and medical doctors. Next, participants will learn about the broad range of capabilities that biomechanists bring to bear, as well as what to expect from a biomechanical engineer when hired. Through the use of several short case studies, participants will navigate various injury scenarios, such as automotive casualty, occupant ejections, injury causation during multiple events, criminal cases, and accidental vs suicide scenarios, from the perspective of a biomechanical engineer. By the end of this course, participants should have a general understanding of the process by which a biomechanical engineer evaluates injury potential, injury patterns, mitigation and/or elimination of injuries, and mechanisms following a reported event.
This course or a portion thereof has been approved by the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Commission of Alabama for a maximum of 1 hours’ credit.
