Community Service & Outreach Project Week October 11th-22nd

Community Service & Outreach Project September 22, 2021

Community Service & OutreachMessage from ADLA President Gerald Swann, Jr.

“As a continuing commitment to giving back in our communities ADLA will initiate its first ever Statewide Community Service Initiative. Each of the four districts under the leadership and guidance of a member from the Board and Young Lawyers Board will facilitate district-wide involvement.  Each firm and member are encouraged to participate in making this a huge success in hopes we can make this an annual event.”

Participating in community service & outreach project is one of the most rewarding things you can do. No matter your age, giving back can help you build friendships, develop new skills, and increase life satisfaction — all while making your local Alabama community a better place.  We hope you will join us on October 11th-22nd!  Questions?  Call the ADLA office at 334-395-4455.

District 1- Mac and Cheese Food Drive

District 1 will be holding a Mac & Cheese Drive to benefit the Downtown Rescue Mission.  District 1 has committed to collecting 1,200 7-14 oz boxes of macaroni and cheese so that families in need will have a Thanksgiving meal.  The Downtown Rescue Mission gives away 1,000 Thanksgiving meals to those in need throughout northern Alabama and southern Tennessee.  They will also be serving hundreds of traditional Thanksgiving meals to the men, women, and children in their care.

A wish list for the Mac & Cheese Drive on Amazon can be found here!

Sam’s Club and Costco have bulk mac & cheese options as well.  There is no brand requirement for donation, however, the individual box size must be between 7-14 oz.

Please send any online purchases to:

Tatum Wilson, PC
Attn: Amber Courtney
301 Randolph Ave SE
Huntsville, AL 35801.

Local donations may be personally delivered to Tatum Wilson, PC.  If you would like a box for collection at your firm, please send an email to Amber Courtney at courtney@tatumwilson.com.  Arrangements can be made to pick up of your donations, if needed.

Monetary donations are also accepted.  Checks may be made payable to Downtown Rescue Mission.  Any cash donations will be used to purchase mac & cheese and reach our goal of 1,200 boxes. Cash donations can also be sent to Amber Courtney, send an email to courtney@tatumwilson.com for further details. District 2- SNACKTOBER | Children’s Snack Drive

Food insecurity is a major issue facing children in the Birmingham area school system.  With lockdowns, quarantines and other challenges facing students reliance on free breakfast and lunch at school may be hard.  After school and supplemental snacks are needed to help children get the nutrition they need daily.

Please join fellow ADLA members in District 2 during SNACKTOBER as we collect snack food items for local school children.  Helping is easy.  Click to directly donate snack items to our packing location.

Interested in helping to pack snack bags?  Then join us on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 5:30pm at Canterbury UMC to pack snack bags that will be distributed to community centers in West End, East Lake, Woodlawn and other areas. Click here to register to pack bags.  Contact ADLA members Bains Fleming at bfleming@nwkt.com or Logan Matthews lmatthews@lightfoot.com with any questions about Community Service & Outreach Project.

District 3- Express-O of Love | Diaper Bank

Express-O of Love is a non-profit organization designed to help parents in need by ensuring that every child has an adequate supply of diapers and wipes.  As the only monthly diaper distribution center in the Montgomery area, Express-O of Love raises awareness about diaper needs in the community.

By helping to meet the diaper needs of a family, Express-O of Love is helping to support the family’s dignity, health, and quality of life. Families can pick up diapers from the diaper bank every third Wednesday of the month.  Make an honorary donation here or purchase diapers from Amazon Wishlist and see the delivery note below.  Please contact ADLA members Jordan Jenkins at jjenkins@hillhillcarter.com or Megan McCarthy at mmccarthy@ball-ball.com with any questions.

District 4- Our Sisters’ Closet | Professional Clothing Drive

Distrct 4 is partnering with Our Sisters’ Closet in Mobile and sponsoring a professional clothing drive with member firms during the months of September and October. Our Sisters’ Closet’s mission “is to improve the self-confidence and job opportunities of in-crisis women, men & teens who are job seeking by providing free interview/workplace clothing, job search tools such as resumes/interview coaching/job search planning, and career advancement training.” Our Sisters’ Closet works with multiple vocational rehab services, social service agencies, and ministries throughout Mobile.

Starting in mid-September, member firms will collect clothing and donations at their office until October 21st.   ADLA project leaders will pick up all donations from member firms and deliver the donations to Our Sisters’ Closet.

Cash Donations are also appreciated to purchase items where donations do not meet the needs such as plus sizes & wide shoes for our female clients, heavy duty workwear for our female & male clients, etc.  It also funds workshops and one-on-one assistance to agencies in Mobile/Baldwin counties and any individual that reaches out to the organization.
